The BNF lists doxycycline capsules in two strengths: 50 mg and 100 mg.

The BNF gives a common adult pattern as 200 mg on the first day, then 100 mg once a day for the rest of the course.

Each question fixes the values needed for its arithmetic. Write the unit beside every step and keep the first day separate from the rest of the course. All prescriptions and patients here are fictional; these are revision materials, not for patient care.

The method

  1. Identify the exact strength, dose and schedule supplied in the question.
  2. Split a first-day dose from the daily doses that follow when the schedule changes.
  3. Calculate capsules per day; divide prescribed mg by mg per capsule.
  4. Add the first day to the remaining days only when a course total is requested.
  5. Check the capsule count is a whole number before reporting it.

Three practice questions

Work each one on paper first, then open the answer. All patients and prescriptions are fictional.

Question 1

A fictional prescription specifies doxycycline 200 mg on day 1, then 100 mg once a day for 6 more days, using 100 mg capsules. How many capsules is the course?

Show the answer

Answer: 8 capsules

Working: Day 1: 200 ÷ 100 = 2 capsules. Then 100 ÷ 100 = 1 capsule a day for 6 days = 6 capsules. 2 + 6 = 8 capsules.

Question 2

A fictional prescription specifies doxycycline 100 mg once a day for 7 days using 50 mg capsules. How many capsules is the course?

Show the answer

Answer: 14 capsules

Working: 100 ÷ 50 = 2 capsules a day. 2 × 7 = 14 capsules.

Question 3

A fictional prescription specifies doxycycline 200 mg on day 1, then 100 mg once a day for 13 more days, using 100 mg capsules. How many capsules is the 14 day course?

Show the answer

Answer: 15 capsules

Working: Day 1: 200 ÷ 100 = 2 capsules. Then 1 capsule a day for 13 days = 13 capsules. 2 + 13 = 15 capsules.

Exam approach

A changing schedule means two calculations: the first day, then the rest. Write both lines before adding.

Where marks are lost

  • Applying the first-day dose to every day of the course.
  • Forgetting to add the first day into a course total.
  • Using 100 mg per capsule when the stated strength is 50 mg.

Frequently asked questions

Are these official assessment questions?

No. They are original revision exercises, not official GPhC questions and not for patient care.

Do I need to memorise the strengths?

The exercise supplies them. In the assessment, read any given product information exactly as written.

How should I check the answer?

Check the requested unit, then work backwards from the quantity to the stated dose and duration.
